Sophie Halma Counseling: meet your therapist
“I felt comfortable with Sophie right away; she quickly became a lifeline for me. Through parenting, major life transitions, and medication changes, she’s consistently offered both validation and gentle challenges that help me grow. After years of therapy with others, no one has come close to the level of care and understanding I’ve received from Sophie.”

My Values as a Therapist
Sophie Halma, MA, LPC
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Kansas. I received my Master’s in Counseling from the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC).
I’m a trauma-informed therapist in Prairie Village, Kansas. I counsel clients navigating the effects of trauma, abuse, or dysfunctional family systems. I also support new moms and parents as they adjust to parenthood and all that it entails. My approach is heartfelt, curious, and engaging, often using humor to create a safe space where clients feel seen and understood. With genuine care and practical tools, I empower clients to heal emotional wounds, break unhelpful patterns, and gain insight while becoming the best version of themselves. I blend evidence-based practices with intuition and warmth, making therapy a creative and collaborative process that serves your unique needs.
I’m a Kansas City native who’s lived and traveled elsewhere, so I understand what it means to leave, grow, and return changed. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years searching for fulfillment in both business and artistic fields, but something was missing. This unique career journey connects me with clients who also may be navigating topics like identity, purpose, and balance. As a parent myself who has navigated birth trauma and postpartum depression, I bring empathy and understanding of the tender season that is new parenthood. Having personally experienced the healing power of EMDR, I know firsthand how transformative trauma work can be.
I am level 2 trained in EMDR, and am actively pursuing certification. I have additional training in polyvagal-informed EMDR and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. I am queer-affirming, HAES-aligned (Health at Every Size), neurodivergent-affirming, and poly-affirming. Whatever identities you bring to the table, you are welcome in this space.
